Not sure if you have heard, read or dined at this restaurant before, but Nanxiang is certainly new to me even though it has been around for a good number of years.
Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant has recently opened their new flagship 100-seat outlet in Plaza Singapura just less than 2 months ago. To celebrate this, Nanxiang’s Executive Chef Yee Cheong Wah who has over 30 years of experience in Chinese Cuisince has launched over 20 new dishes at wallet friendly prices after understudying in Nan Xiang, Shanghai China.

One of the new dishes that i tried was Jelly Fish with Spicy Vinegar ($6.80). I was taken aback when i had my first bite for this cold sweet and sour appetizing dish. Why? Because it was totally different from what i had expected. It was really quite crunchy. Then i was told it was because Nanxiang uses only the head, the premium part of a jelly fish unlike most restaurants that use jellyfish tentacles. Personally, i still prefer the tentacles but i think most of you would be sold by this premium part though!

Actually, one of the highlights for the dinner was this Yuan Yang Duck Tongue ($8) which i couldn’t bring myself to order despite my curiosity hence the photo from the menu. Hahaa! But if you are game enough, i heard this dish tastes very much like chicken feet -> gelatinous!

And then we had Steamed Egg with Clams ($6) which i really looked forward to! As some of you might know, i’ve done quite a few home cooked dishes with clams and steamed egg with clams sounded brilliant, mainly because i couldn’t wait to replicate it at home. Oops! Grin.
This egg dish is exactly what you think it is (the picture says it all!). Steamed to perfection, the egg was smooth and soft, and with the clams in it, that natural seafood sweetness cannot be not detected. My only gripe was, it was a little on the salty side which i reckon could be downplayed if you were to request when order is being placed.

I was asked to give this Vermicelli with Crab Roe ($12.80) a try because i love, love crab roe! With the look and its robust color, need i say some more? ^_^

What you are seeing above is customized to 2 pieces per flavour. Usually, what you will get is 6 pieces of the same flavour per basket. I had Shrimp & Pork Filling Steamed Bun ($7.80- 6 pieces), Crab Roe & Pork Filling Steamed Bun ($11.80- 6 pieces) and Spicy Crabmeat & Pork Filling Steamed Bun ($11.80- 6 pieces). To be honest, i love all 3 and if i were to go again, i’d probably order the fancier ones mainly because i really like crab and crab roe! Hahaha! So yes, i’m a little biased here! :P

Because HungryCow knows i’m a pescetarian (almost), most of the dishes ordered were meatless (such a sweetie!) except for steamed buns. “Hua Niang” Steamed Cod Fish ($13) tasted like what i’d dish out at home. Very home-cooked style. Nice!

I don’t know about you but being Chinese, rice completes my Chinese dinner. It will be strange not to eat rice when i’m eating the above dishes, especially the steamed egg with clams! I like topping my rice with soft egg and wolf it down. Heh! I like this Shanghai Vegetable Rice ($7) quite a bit. The wok hei was unmistakable. And it kinda make me less guilty because i was eating vegetables too! :P

If you are ordering this King Sized Nanxiang Crab Roe Steamed Soup Bun ($6.80), promise me you will not eat the skin ok? Because first of all, it is not meant to be eaten! All you need to do is slurp the yummy thick broth in it that contains a generous good portion of crab meat and crab roe. :)

Crab Roe Soup in Prawn Ball ($5.20- 2 pieces) is quite adorable looking isn’t it? Who would have thought this isn’t some kind of dessert! If you like sotong ball or prawn ball, you will love this! What more, this comes with creamy crab roe soup inside! With so much crab roe at one sitting for this meal of mine, i confirm busted my cholesterol level that day. Heeee!

Yam Pastry with Sesame ($5.20- 4 pieces) is yums! If you are anything like me who go ga-ga over yam paste, this is a must!

Golden Pumpkin Cake ($3.60- 2 pieces) reminds me of mochi! Again, this is a must to order if you are a pumpkin, mochi or hum chim peng person. But if you have to choose between this and the above yam paste with sesame, i’d say go for this. This one is kinder to my teeth that’s why! :P

Icy Water Cress Honey ($2.50)

For a first-time diner like me, one of the things i noticed was Nanxiang’s uinque interior décor theme that makes use of the iconic ‘zhen long’ (bamboo baskets) used for steaming buns. Then as i looked around, i realized the whole outlet has almost bamboo-everything as their deco!
Perhaps because i was at the booth seats, i don’t feel the buzz too much and i could eat and chat comfortably for a good 2 whole hours unlike some other restaurants during peak hours, my seat is barely warm when i scoot off due to the stress (errr… i’m one of those people who cannot linger around and take my own sweet time if i see lines (snaking or not) forming outside the restaurant :P).
Being a restaurant with strong Chinese, namely Nan Xiang, Shanghai influenced, most of the dishes are a leeeetttle bit salty but luckily, they are not too generous with oil. But if you can take authentic Japanese ramen around the city, this is good for ya!
Thank you Food News and Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant for the lovely dinner and wonderful company.

Don’t you just love it when the steamed bum has soup inside? I’ve been wondering how I can incorporate that into my gyoza?
