Do you know that 1 in 3 primary school students don’t eat breakfast daily?
Based on the survey conducted with 363 parents of primary school students in Singapore by a group of final year students from NTU Wee Kim Wee School, these children are very likely to skip breakfast too when they’re older.
How is this a problem?
According to research, children who skip breakfast :
. Tend to be listless and lose concentration in class
. Are likely to be moody and temperamental
. Are at higher risk of weight problems in later years
To raise awareness of this issue, these applaudable students started a campaign called Rise & Shine Breakfast Campaign, a community effort that aims to promote healthy breakfast eating on daily basis among children aged 4 – 12.
Needless to say, i was roped in when i volunteered myself to help with the survey without knowing what survey it was for. Grin. Of course, i don’t anyhow volunteer lah.. but this one, it was because a gf asked on behalf of her intern so, i thought, ‘Ok lahh, for the gf’ and ta-dah.. here i am, blogging about it. :)
As some of you may already know, i’ve got 3 boys, 2 being primary school goers, and i never fail to make them eat before going to school. Breakfast, to me, is ultra important. The husband and i are both a breakfast person and we know how important breakfast is so the boys MUST eat their share even when they protest vehemently.
Why do i insist the boys on eating their breakfast despite the protests and all?
Boys being boys, they usually skip their meals during recess. The first thing that comes to mind once the bell rings is Let’s play soccer! Let’s play catching! It’s play play play and the stomachs will be ignored. Boy1, because of this, gotten his first gastric 2 years back. Fortunately, the problem has now been nipped in the bud. Phew!
Truth be told, i don’t do any fancy breakfast on weekdays. It’s too troublesome and time consuming. That’s when the granola comes in. It’s so easy that the boys can prepare it themselves without any help from me. On other days when the granola jars are empty, there’ll be eggs, breads, pau, mantou, Teochew kueh… the choices are aplenty! *wink*
